Oil Price Decline and Jobs in Alberta Cities

Unless you have been living under a cave and just came out to enjoy the beautiful summer weather, you'd know that the oil prices have fallen quite a bit since last year. Despite staging a decent recovery earlier this spring, the prices are still down by more than 40% from the peaks of last year.

Consequently, we have seen a drop of nearly 60% in the number of people moving to Alberta (2015 Q1 vs 2014 Q1, source StatCan).

And why did that happen? Because there are fewer jobs available in Calgary, as compared to last year. Even though several employers still have difficulty in filling certain positions in Calgary, the number of job openings has dropped by about 29%.

We are looking at May 2014 versus May 2015 for comparison purposes.

How about the impact at ground zero aka Fort Mcmurray?
Fort Mcmurray has seen slightly bigger drop in the number of job openings. The number of openings has dropped by about 32% as compared to last year.

And closer to Wowjobs' home, Edmonton? The number of job openings in Edmonton has fallen by just about the same amount as Calgary, i.e. 28%.

The silver lining? Grande Prairie. The number of job openings has remained just about the same.

Job Competition in Big Metros

Economic conditions across our country are different. From the booming Calgary job market, to the more subdued economic areas like London or Windsor, jobs available as a proportion of population show wide disparity. As an additional tool for job seekers to help them easily figure out the best areas for their job search, we present a series of new blog posts that will show the relative ease (or difficulty) in finding jobs across Canada. We'll start first with the biggest metro areas in Canada. These are the areas with populations close to or above half a million people.

Not surprisingly, the cities with least competition for jobs are those with the highest inter provincial and overall immigration. Edmonton and Calgary both saw their populations increase by over 10% in the periods between 2006 and 2011. The reason is simple-Alberta has loads of jobs
Despite, the recent set backs, the Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge area is doing quite well. We'll see how the Blackberry layoffs and the downstream impact will impact the overall competition for jobs here.  Despite the recent tech set backs, there are plenty of finance, information technology and insurance jobs available here.

Hello Singapore

The current global recession is making life harder for almost everyone across the world, but even more so for job seekers. We are trying our best to simplify the job search process for job seekers in several countries by giving them the widest width and depth in job search results, user friendly design and interface and simplicity in overall site usage.
In our attempt to deliver on this goal, we are pleased to announce the launch of Wowjobs Singapore-Singapore's largest job search engine. When we say that we offer the largest job search engine in a specific country, we really mean it. We offer the widest selection of fresh jobs that are typically unavailable at any other job board or job search engine.
